A Mexican Navy sailing ship has hit New York's landmark Brooklyn Bridge, killing two people on board.

The Mexican ship, called Cuauhtemoc, was passing under the bridge on the eastern side of Manhattan on Saturday night.

Footage shows the masts of the ship strike the bridge and snap one after another.

New York City officials said the vessel is a training ship. They added that among 277 people on board, no one fell into the river, but two died and over 10 were injured.

They also said the Brooklyn Bridge suffered no significant damage.

The iconic bridge over the East River opened in 1883. It is more than 1,800 meters long and features stone arches. Its pedestrian promenade attracts tourists.

The political wrangling over the conflict in Ukraine is continuing. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he wants to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Turkey on Thursday. That is his response to Putin's proposal for direct negotiations between the two countries.

Zelenskyy suggested in a social media post that he wants a full and lasting ceasefire to begin on Monday. He said there is no point in prolonging the killings. The president added that he hopes the Russians will not look for excuses.

Putin said that direct talks need to restart. He stressed that there will be no preconditions.

Negotiations aimed at achieving a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine were previously held in Istanbul. That was in March of 2022, about a month after Moscow's invasion started.

Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke by telephone about a peace deal on Sunday.

Erdogan said his country is ready to host negotiations that will lead to a lasting solution. He also said that a comprehensive ceasefire would create the necessary environment for peace talks. The president is said to have noted that a window of opportunity to achieve peace has been opened.

Kyiv and its allies have been urging Moscow to commit to a 30-day ceasefire. French President Emmanuel Macron said in a social media message that a ceasefire is needed so that talks can begin.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz indicated that he expects Moscow to agree to a ceasefire. He said talks cannot start until the weapons fall silent. But Putin did not mention a ceasefire in his proposal.

Pope Leo XIV has delivered his first Sunday blessing and speech after he was elected new head of the Roman Catholic Church. He called for a peaceful solution to conflicts around the world.

The pontiff stepped out onto the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City and addressed a crowd. The Holy See estimates about 100,000 people turned up at St. Peter's Square.

The pope appealed for every effort to be made to reach an authentic, just and lasting peace in Ukraine as soon as possible.

He also sought an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, and called for the resumption of humanitarian aid provision for people in the enclave and the release of all remaining hostages still held there.

The pope echoed words of his predecessor, the late Pope Francis, in calling for leaders of the world to avoid any more wars.

A member of the audience said the new pope sent very important words to all of humanity.

The pope had also repeated the word "peace" on Thursday, when he gave his first speech to a crowd of followers as pontiff.

He will attend a mass on May 18, in which participants will congratulate him on his ascension to the throne of St. Peter.

Japan's government is aiming to reach a package deal with the US that includes a review of auto tariffs, and will study how to win concessions from Washington.

Japan's chief tariff negotiator Akazawa Ryosei returned home on Saturday, after holding his second round talks with officials of President Donald Trump's administration.

After getting a briefing, Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru told Akazawa and Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa to quickly and carefully study plans ahead of the next round of talks, possibly in mid-May or later.

Japan strongly sought a review of Trump's tariffs in the latest round. US officials repeated their stance from the first round of talks that special treatment cannot be given only to Japan on steel and autos.

Still, Ishiba called the talks "constructive," saying in-depth discussions were held on issues including autos and other sector-by-sector levies.

Akazawa calls the tariffs "regrettable", and says Japan cannot agree unless all are included in a package deal.

Government sources say Japan proposed a review of its rules to make it easier to import American vehicles. It also broached expanding imports of corn and soybeans, and technical cooperation in shipbuilding.

The sources say the US side presented a list of what it identified as Japan's "non-tariff barriers."

Japanese government officials believe there is room for both sides to find common ground. They plan to study areas where the Trump administration could possibly concede ground.

Ukraine and the United States have signed an economic partnership agreement to co-develop Ukrainian natural resources including critical minerals.

Ukraine's economy ministry announced that its First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent agreed in Washington on Wednesday to establish the Reconstruction Investment Fund.

Ukraine says the fund will be jointly managed by Ukraine and the United States, and will invest in projects aimed at extracting the minerals, oil and gas, as well as related infrastructure and processing.

The announcement notes that all resources in Ukraine's territory and in its territorial waters belong to Ukraine, and stresses that neither party will hold a dominant vote as a reflection of equal partnership between the two countries.

Under the deal, the US will contribute to the fund either through direct financial input or new military assistance, which may include the provision of air defense systems for Ukraine.

The Ukrainian announcement says the deal reflects the US commitment to lasting peace in Ukraine, but avoided mentioning security guarantees that it has been asking the US to provide.

On Wednesday, the US Treasury Department released a statement on the deal.

It says, "This economic partnership positions our two countries to work collaboratively and invest together to ensure that our mutual assets, talents, and capabilities can accelerate Ukraine's economic recovery."

In February, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump had a heated exchange at the White House, and the deal was not signed at that time.

Observers are closely watching to see whether the US-Ukrainian deal will have any impact on discussions over a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
